I’ve always appreciated the opportunity Trent’s departure afforded me. Initially the leadership challenges were extensive, over staffing, finances etc. It took months and months to get the finances and personal straight. I believe WDE now has the finest leadership team in any department of education. The interest in this race continues to grow! |

![]() I had a unique opportunity to visit with the U.S. Secretary of Education and his staff as a result of our work on what needs to be changed in NCLB . . . We had forwarded our draft work to one of Sen. Enzi`s staffers who forwarded it to one of the Secretary`s staff. Tim Lockwood and I spent about two hours discussing both the changes that need to occur to the law and the impact the law has/will have on the National Standards, National Assessment effort and how they must be integrated. There were only five State Superintendents invited . . . I was the only representative for the Western States. I continue to believe that we need to stay engaged in national education issues – we need to continue to influence the new law, standards and assessment. |
